Five Al Pacino’s movies I like most
Recently I have watched the movie Heat, and the great performance of Al Pacino in this movie made me retrospect his career, as Al Pacino is one of my favorite actors.
Alfredo James “Al Pacino” (born April 25, 1940). He is a brilliant screen and stage actor. And it believed that AL Pacino is a pioneer of method acting as he has lived in every role he played. Al Pacino is famous for the trilogy — Godfather, Godfather II, and Godfather III. No doubt, he has acted brilliantly in these films. A few Al Pacino’s characters, such as Tony Montana and Michael Corleone will be remembered for decades. In between his film, Al Pacino appeared in several television productions for HBO. Pacino frequently returned to the stage during his career.
He ruled the empire of acting for more than five decades.
I always love his dialog delivery in a much-cooled manner but very powerful way, shouting sometimes, the way he walked, he smoked, and how he could act with his penetrating gaze. Whenever I watch movies of Al Pacino, inevitably glimpses of Amitabh Bachchan’s Janjeer, and his later movies come before my eyes. Moreover, I feel that Amitabh Bachchan has developed his image of ‘Angry young man’ over his Al Pacino influence. Nevertheless, Amitabh Bachchan is the greatest actor of all time.
Al Pacino is one of few actors to have won numerous awards and accolades like 8 nominations for Oscar Award, and winner of one Oscar award for best actor in the leading role in ‘Scent of a Woman’ and many other awards to his credit.
All of the Al Pacino movies are great. To choose five of them is a difficult task!
Below are the five Al Pacino Movies I liked most
1. The Godfather
Whenever we talk about greatest movies of all time, the first name comes to mind is The Godfather, which was released on 14 March 1972, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, and still shines on our cultural sky space. It is an adoption of Mario Puzo’s book by the same name. Al Pacino’s great performance as Michael Corleone, a gangster’s son who unwillingly takes over the family business. The story, the performance, the cinematography, the music all so perfect and all woven together so wonderfully well by director Francis Ford Coppola who has created such a classic movie. Godfather is a timeless masterpiece. Fans of the movie will come back and watch it again and again to witness Al Pacino and Marlon Brando in their absolute finest performance.
Bollywood movie Sarkar 2005, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan is inspired from The Godfather 1972.
2. Serpico
This movie was released on 5 December 1973, directed by Sidney Lumet. It is a real-life story of a New York cop who fights against corruption in the police department. Unlike all his colleagues, he refuses a share of the money that the cops routinely extort from local criminals. Nobody wants to work with Serpico, and he is in constant danger of being placed in life-threatening positions by his “Partners”. Nothing seems to be done even when he goes to the highest of authorities. Despite the dangers he finds himself in, he still refuses to ‘go with the flow’, in the hope that one day, the truth will be known. Al Pacino won the Golden Globe as Best Film Drama Actor for his best performance, yet lost the Oscar.
3. Scarface
This movie was released on 1 Dec 1983, directed by Brian De Palma. The film is about a Cuban immigrant in Florida who rose to power as a major drug mafia king. Al Pacino is playing a character which is brutal, angry, and fearless and at the same time, he has a deep rooted love for his sister Gina.
There is one heartbreaking scene in the movie that Al Pacino (Tony) feels, his friend Manny is not a good match for her sister Gina. He tells Manny to stay away from Gina, but they keep dating without his knowledge. When he finds Manny with Gina his anger is unleashed and he shoots Manny and he dies on the spot. Gina tells him that yesterday only they had married and she was to give him a surprise.
Best quote by Tonny Montana from Scarface that I like most is — “I always tell the truth even when I lie” and “Every day above ground is a good day”!
Bollywood movie Agnipath is inspired by ‘Scarface” and both the movies have a lot in common.
And I believe, in Agnipath, Amitabh Bachchan has imitated Al Pacino.
4. Scent of a Woman
This movie was released on 23 Dec 1992, directed by Martin Brest. Al Pacino won his long-overdue Oscar award for his role in “Scent of a woman”. The Academy award the first of his career after four previous nominations, which is his eighth overall nomination. The film was nominated for Best Director, Best Picture and Best Screenplay. The film won three major awards at the Golden Globe Awards: Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor, and Best Motion Picture.
Al Pacino was shown as a blind man and I have watched it closely just to watch his eyes, and remarkable thing is that throughout the movie he has not blinked his eyes even once. Al Pacino’s speech in the climax scene and Al Pacino’s tango in the restaurant is my ever favorite; Al Pacino was fantastic in it. Besides, there is the timeless unforgettable line ‘hoo-aha’ which later become Al Pacino’s trademark.
5. The Humbling
This movie was released on August 30, 2014, directed by Barry Levinson. It is based on the novel “The Humbling” by Phillip Roth. Al Pacino plays the role of Simon Axler aging actor in a brilliant performance, supported by great actors like Greta Gerwing and Dianne Wiest. The story involves a retired Broadway actor who is losing his memory, following a breakdown and suicide attempt, he is involved in a girl, who is the daughter of someone he used to know. Then the two begin a friendship, she is a much younger woman but as their relationship heats, Simon has difficulty keeping pace with her.
This is a great movie and it is always good to see Al Pacino!
